US Army – 60 years in Ansbach
After the war, the US armed forces settled into the former Ansbach barracks. Trough the years and trides of world politics, German and Americans established friendships and American families became a familiar part of the city’s landscape. At one time there were 15.000 Americans living in the area, but many of them were transferred back to the States after the disbandment of the Warsaw Pact. What remained was the helicopter base in Katterbach, that started in 1937, and later served as the base fot the “Condo” fighter squadron. It was expanded to a modern European helicopter airport and currently hosts the 4th Brigade of the 1st Infantry Division.
