| The Orangerie and Castle Garden
The history of the “Orangerie” in the Castle Garden is characterized by the signatures of two strong women: Christiane Charlotte, the artistic and highly educated wife of Margrave Wilhelm Friedrich (1703 – 1723), tasked architecy Carl Friedrich von Zocha with the construction of the elegant Orangerie according to French models after her husband’s death in 1723, as well as the restructuring of the Castle Garden to French landscaping in 1724 with its artificial Baroque geometry. But in 1782 a change of plans was initiated by Lady Elisabeth Craven, second wife of the last Margrave Christian Friedrich Carl Alexander. The plans were implemented only much later under the Prussian protectorate (1791 -1806) for rather more pragmatic than poetic reasons, since it was cheaper to maintain an English garden than a Baroque park. Tho Rose Garden with the integrated Herb Garden inspired by the “New Herb Book” by the Margrave’s personal doctor, Dr. Leonhard Fuchs, and created in 2001 are well worth a side trip. |
