The Palace of Ansbach: the residence of Margraves
Baroque facade of the Ansbach residence of the Hohenzollern dinasty. The facade was built on 1705 according to plans of the famous Italian builder Gabriel de Gabrielli around 250 years after the first Margrave started to turn small town on the Rezat river to a far reaching Residence city. Around the year 1400, Friedrich VI, the lord of the Nuremberg Castle, had already built a water castle “by the stoneybridge”. The history of the Residence City started with the Hohenzollern electoral lord Albrecht Achilles who designed Ansbach as the arena for his glamorous court, and relocated the “Imperial County Court of the Nuremberg Earldom”. Albrect Achilles is at the beginning of a line of thirteen sovereigns that ruled Ansbach in an unbroken succession until 1791.
One of the famous Margrave was the “Wild” Carl Wilhelm Friedrich who, although was concerned about economic growth, he spent the money generously on construction projects as Ansbach’s most important builder: the Herrieder Gate, the Synagogue, the completion of the court church St. Gumbertus, the Carolinum High School, the “New visions” buildings around Carl’s square can all be credited to him.
